The College Football Playoff’s management committee met Wednesday in Rosemont, Illinois, to discuss the postseason’s future. The group is evaluating whether a 24-team bracket could work, but the CFP said the talks with ESPN remain confidential and no decision or expansion commitment has been made.
The immediate calendar is clear: the exclusive negotiating window with ESPN ends October 9. After that, the committee will weigh what it learned. The CFP has separately set a December 1 deadline for deciding whether to change the format for the 2027–28 season.
What changes this season—and what does not
There will be no sudden bracket expansion for the 2026–27 season. The CFP announced in January that this season remains a 12-team playoff. The new item fans will notice this December is a change to bowl-path selection: the top seeds will choose their bowl destination in ranking order, with set time limits and no reseeding afterward.
That distinction matters because playoff expansion talk can sound like a done deal when it is still a negotiation. The 24-team model is under consideration, but the official update leaves open whether the field grows, when any change might begin, and how the calendar and bowl structure would fit around it.
The questions behind a bigger bracket
More places could give additional teams a meaningful path into the postseason, especially programs outside the usual championship conversation. A larger field would also mean more games to place on an already crowded schedule. How conferences share access, how late the season runs, and how players manage the extra workload all deserve answers before the number of teams becomes the headline.
For now, the next meaningful checkpoint is October 9, when the ESPN discussion window closes—not an announcement that the playoff has expanded.
Kris’s Take
Don’t call 24 teams a done deal. Expansion should be judged by whether it creates real access for more programs and keeps the postseason workable for athletes, not just by how big a bracket looks on TV. The committee has a deadline to evaluate the proposal; fans should expect clarity about the process before they expect a new format.
