Dylan Garand waited only four NHL games for his first shutout. More important for the Rangers, he looked like he belonged for every minute of it.
Garand stopped 22 shots Friday night as New York beat the Detroit Red Wings 2–0 at Little Caesars Arena. The 24-year-old rookie handled Detroit’s best chances through the first two periods, then faced only two shots in the third as the Rangers closed the game down in front of him.
Sean Durzi supplied the goal that mattered, scoring on the power play at 5:12 of the first period for his first goal as a Ranger. Eeli Tolvanen added an empty-netter with 1:16 left.
A young goalie making a quick case
Garand is now 3–0–1 through his first four NHL appearances. According to the Rangers, he is the first New York goalie to earn at least one standings point in each of his first four games since Henrik Lundqvist in 2005–06. He also became the eighth rookie goalie in franchise history to record his first shutout within four games.
Those numbers do not make Garand a finished NHL goalie. They do make him a useful option while Joonas Korpisalo is sidelined with a lower-body injury. New York played the second half of a back-to-back after Igor Shesterkin’s 24-save win over Tampa Bay on Thursday, and Garand kept the standard right where Shesterkin left it.
The Rangers helped him finish it
Detroit pushed for an equalizer in the middle period, but New York did not spend the final 20 minutes hanging on. The Red Wings produced just two third-period shots. That is the kind of finish a coaching staff wants in front of a young goalie: fewer scrambles, fewer second chances and no need for a miracle save to protect the result.
The Rangers also killed both Detroit power plays and have now erased all 10 opposing chances since their opening-night loss. They leave the back-to-back at 2–1–0, with consecutive wins and only one goal allowed across the two victories.
Kris’s Take
Garand’s shutout is a better sign than a one-night highlight because the Rangers did not ask him to steal the game. He made the saves he had to make, and the team in front of him managed the third period like a group that trusted its structure. My take: New York should resist turning four games into a grand declaration, but it can stop treating Garand like an emergency answer. He has earned a real look as part of the plan.
