The NFL has suspended San Francisco 49ers principal owner Jed York for six games and fined him $500,000 for violating the league’s personal conduct policy.
The league announced the discipline Friday. York has stayed away from the 49ers’ first three games and league meetings, and the NFL is counting that absence toward the suspension. He must serve three more games and is eligible to return October 20, after San Francisco’s Week 6 game against Washington.
What led to the discipline
York was arrested in Ohio in August after responding to an undercover online prostitution advertisement, according to the NFL and Associated Press reporting. Prosecutors amended an initial charge of engaging in prostitution to disorderly conduct. York pleaded no contest to that charge and to possessing criminal tools, which involved the phone used to answer the advertisement.
He received concurrent one-day jail sentences with credit for time served and was fined $1,150. In a statement released Friday, York accepted the NFL’s decision, apologized and said he must earn back trust.
The punishment does not change San Francisco’s 3–0 record, but it removes the franchise’s principal owner from team and league business for another three games. That matters because the personal conduct policy applies to ownership as well as players and coaches.
Kris’s Take
A six-game suspension and a $500,000 fine are serious on paper, but the NFL also credited York for time he had already stayed away. The real standard is consistency. If the league says its conduct policy reaches everyone, then owners cannot be treated as a separate class when they embarrass their team and the league. York accepted responsibility. Now the NFL’s handling of future owner discipline has to match the standard it says it enforced here.
