Columbus got an immediate return from its biggest newcomer. Matthew Knies scored twice and added an assist in his Blue Jackets debut, helping Columbus beat the Buffalo Sabres 6–3 at Nationwide Arena on Thursday night.

The opener carried extra attention because Knies had only joined Columbus on Monday. The Blue Jackets acquired him from Toronto in a six-player trade that sent Kirill Marchenko to the Maple Leafs. Knies’ first game in Columbus offered an early look at what that roster bet might deliver.

A quick adjustment, and a piece of team history

Knies put Columbus ahead 2–1 with a power-play goal late in the first period. He added his second on a redirection in the second, restoring a two-goal cushion after Buffalo had closed the gap. Sean Monahan later scored on the power play, and Mathieu Olivier added an empty-net goal to finish the 6–3 result.

The NHL’s recap noted that Knies became the first Blue Jackets player to score multiple goals in his team debut. His three points also matched the franchise debut record, previously set by Artemi Panarin. Charlie Coyle contributed three assists, while goaltender Jet Greaves made 23 saves.

For fans, the early question is how quickly the new pieces can become a reliable unit. One game cannot settle the value of a major trade, but Columbus already saw Knies create offense in different situations and Coyle help drive the attack.

Kris’s Take

One opener is a spark, not proof that Columbus won the trade. Still, Knies made the kind of first impression the Blue Jackets needed: he scored on the power play, finished around the net, and gave the home crowd a reason to believe the new top-six mix can work. The next test is doing it when opponents have a full game plan for him. If Coyle and Knies keep finding each other, Columbus may have a real scoring combination—not just a memorable debut.
