The NBA has closed NBA Academy Africa, its elite training center in Saly, Senegal, Reuters reported Thursday. The league told Reuters that it is shifting its academy training to a new global hub planned for Abu Dhabi, while continuing other basketball programs on the continent.
The Senegal academy opened in 2018 and combined basketball development with schooling and support for prospects from across Africa. Former staff told Reuters that roughly 110 students passed through the program. Its closure changes how young players reach the NBA’s coaching and scouting network, even as the league says a single international hub can give prospects broader exposure.
Centralizing training changes the route in
A shared hub could concentrate elite coaching and make it easier for scouts to see players from different regions in one place. But access is more than a training schedule. Travel, schooling, housing, and a dependable route from local programs all shape whether talented teenagers can actually use that opportunity.
The NBA says its work in Africa continues through the Basketball Africa League and Basketball Without Borders. Those initiatives matter, but they do not automatically replace a year-round academy for players who need daily instruction and education alongside basketball.
What fans should watch next
The next measure is practical: how the new hub selects athletes, how often it scouts locally, and what support is available to prospects who cannot easily relocate. The league has described a more centralized system; its details will show whether the change widens the pipeline or narrows the number of players who can reach it.
Kris’s Take
Moving elite training to one hub may be efficient, but efficiency is not the same as access. The NBA should make the replacement pathway visible: where it scouts, how students qualify, and what education and travel support they receive. Until those details are clear, calling the move a broader opportunity is a promise that still needs proof.
