The San Jose Sharks began their season with a comeback win, but the Florida Panthers left the ice with a more serious question than the result. Luca Cagnoni scored his first NHL goal 3:14 into overtime to finish a 4–3 Sharks victory Thursday night. Florida captain Aleksander Barkov had already left the game after an awkward fall in the second period.

San Jose held its nerve after the lead disappeared

San Jose surged ahead 3–0, with Will Smith scoring twice, including a short-handed goal, and Mason Marchment finding the net in his Sharks debut. Florida answered with two goals from Eetu Luostarinen, then Matthew Tkachuk tied it just 17 seconds after the second Luostarinen goal.

In overtime, Smith turned playmaking into the decisive moment, feeding Cagnoni for a shot past Akira Schmid. Macklin Celebrini had three assists, and goalie Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves. For a team opening its season, recovering after a three-goal cushion vanished made the finish more revealing than a routine early win.

Florida’s concern is bigger than an opening-night loss

Barkov left at 8:07 of the second period after going down awkwardly while battling for the puck. The NHL reported that he walked to the dressing room; no diagnosis or timetable had been announced by the time this story was published. That uncertainty matters because he missed all of last season after surgery to repair his right ACL and MCL.

The Panthers had opened their schedule with an overtime win over Carolina. Now the immediate focus shifts to Barkov’s status. One early-season loss is manageable; the captain’s health is the question Florida cannot answer from the scoreboard.

Kris’s Take

San Jose earned a memorable opener, and Cagnoni could hardly have scripted a better first NHL goal. But the most consequential moment for Florida may have come before overtime. There is no reason to guess at Barkov’s diagnosis; until the Panthers provide an update, the right read is simply that his exit is concerning given the knee surgery that cost him a full season. The Sharks get the celebration tonight. Florida waits for news that matters more than one point in the standings.
